Long Ago and Today / Thanksgiving

Oh my!!  I can’t believe that October is almost over.  We are getting ready to move on to our Long Ag & Today / Thanksgiving Unit.  I love this unit.  My students always enjoy learning about how things have changed over the years.  We always bring this unit to a close by having our own feast where my students and I do all the cooking and invite our parents to come and eat with us.  It is one of those MEMORIES we love to make while learning about cooking measurements, how preparing food has changed over the years, healthy foods, how to set a table and how we can cooperate to make this event all possible and MUCH more.  This is going to be a great month!!!

Below is a look at my TPT unit that we complete in my class. Please take a look!!

Pumpkin Fun!!!

Last week we learned all about pumpkins!  I just realize that I had a few pictures I thought some of my families might enjoy.  I used my pumpkin unit as we explored a pumpkin.  Here are just a little that we did.

Math Common Core

We put a new twist on an old activity.  We always like to use our fall leaves and practice writing the numbers 0-20 and putting them in order, but this year we worked on developing concepts of counting & cardinality by adding the number of chips on top of each number.

My little friends loved doing this!!!!

Pumpkin time!!

Wow Pumpkins!!  We love pumpkins.  I asked my class to predict what would happen if we added soil to our pumpkin.  The most common answer was that it would rot.  One child said it would grow and my little friends were very adamant that would NOT happen.  We next completed our prediction page.  Well I guess I started it a little too soon this year.  It sprouted in 4 days!!  How exciting when my little friends came into the class that morning!!  It was an exciting day.  We could tell a difference from morning to afternoon on how tall it grew.

We started with one sprout and by the afternoon, we had more!!

I have just put my Pumpkin Unit on TPT.  It is a fun filled learning unit!!

Common Core Math

All of our teachers have been super busy implementing the Common Core Math Standards!!  It has been so much fun working together to come up with new and exciting ideas!!  We have a great math specialist who has really been a great help.  Check out some of the great pictures.

Using five frame cards!!  We have really enjoyed playing all kinds of games.

One to one correspondence with ladybugs!!  We added a great twist by using tweezers to help develop our fine motor skills!!

50’s Day is coming soon!!

50’s Day is coming soon!!  I just got my 50’s day unit completed!  This day is one of our most memorable in my class.  The children LOVE it. I am posting it tonight on my TPT store.  Hope you enjoy.

Our kindergarten Team celebrates with rotations for each class.  We each plan an activity to complete with every kindergarten class.  Our students love getting to interact with the other teachers.

I have added many math activities with the number 50, but I have also included several that center around literacy.  I have included the activities we do in our rotation but also many more I do in my classroom during the day.

Numbers 0-10 & some 10-20 -Celebrity Unit

We have just adopted the Common Core Math standards this year!!  Our kindergarten team has put a great deal of time and effort into these new standards. Our team of teachers is an awesome group!!!  Only the best for our students.

Our district has dictated what standards we will cover and how long to cover them.  So we started with numbers 0-5 and then will move into numbers 6-10.

My students have really loved the math activities from my Celebrity Unit!!

See below:

Great opportunity to talk about left to right also!!

I was able to differentiate with my students.  I made the game using numbers 0-20.  We started with # 0-10, I was curious to see which students could put the numbers in order past 10 when they had easily done 0-10.  I learned a great deal about my friends!!

Shapes

Wow!!  I feel like the past two week have been a blur!!  We have be so fast paced at school.  The children have really begun to get into the routines.  We have been having such a great time while learning.
During shapes my friends have really enjoyed our math integration.  I ask , "What has been your favorite parts of the week .“  And their response was:

Making shapes with craft sticks

Making shapes with their bodies

Making shapes with the geo boards

The planning stage!!  :)

I was really surprised, not a single recess was mentioned!!!

Voting

Amazing, that I am talking about the upcoming election, but I have begun gathering my old ideas and putting together an even more FUN and Exciting experience for my classroom friends.  My great friend in second grade, Mrs. Reese, and I are teaming up for a great learning experience for our students.

I really have enjoyed this unit every four years for the Presidential Election.  This will be the first time Mrs. Reese and I have partnered for this fun.  Four years ago she was in kindergarten with me and now she is enjoying a new adventure in 2nd grade.

We are in the beginning stages of this unit.  One example is getting our children registered to vote in the upcoming election we will be holding.

I will be adding pictures as soon as we get a few together.  I can’t seem to, locate my ones from the past elections.

This has been taking up most of my free time.  I will get some pictures from our unit we are in the middle of now ASAP.  I have some great pictures from our 2-D shape unit we are now in the middle of.  Great fun today with simple craft sticks.

I have just put my Vote unit on TPT.  See below for a little preview of what it looks like.

B.E. A Star Binder

Wow, school is off to a great start!!  I just love all of my new little friends.  I wanted to share my B.E.  A Star Binder.  This has been such a great tool to use in my room.  For me it is all inclusive.  It has information for my parents, interactive calendar section for my students and their poetry notebook all in one.

Begin teaching young children how to be organized with this binder.  This is the best tool to help children keep all of their items in one place.  I have all of the information the parents could ever need here in one place.  I also have our class calendar working section and our poetry section here in this binder.  I have used this format for years when I taught 2nd grade but now use it with my kindergarten class.  I never realized what a benefit it could be for this age also.  I have been able to tweak my format with ideas from fellow teachers at my school.  I have added this to my TPT store.  Click on my TPT button to go to my store. If you choose to purchase it, I hope you find some of these pages beneficial for your little friends and their parents.

First Day Of School

Wow!!  Today was great!  I got to spend the whole day with all of my new friends.  We had a great time.  We learned routines, made rules for our class, and began to learn a little about circle maps with our first Star of The Day.  We chose our Winthrop intern to be our first.  All of my children enjoyed being the new celebrities in kindergarten.
One of our favorite activites was chasing down our gingerbread cookies that jumped from the oven.
Here are a few pictures of the hallway and a few items in our room to go along with our Celebrity Theme.
Tomorrow we are stamping our handprints to go along with our "Walk of Fame".  Can't wait.  We are going to be doing our celebrity glyph and more of my celebrity unit ideas next week.
